Gaming News - 28/4/11

Hello everybody and welcome to the Gaming News for today, Thursday 28th April 2011.

Making the gaming headlines today, the biggest headline is news from Sony. After the events of the past week Nick Caplin, head of communications for SCEE has posted an FAQ of the questions that seemingly everyone has wanted answered.

Caplin answered numerous questions on topics incuding whether Sony are working with law enforcement to investigate the person or group behind the outage, which they are. Another question asked if they have identified the party or parties behind the personal information theft, which they haven't but are investigating.

As well as various other things asked and answered Caplin briefly described that all PSN users will be asked to change their password upon the service being reactivated and that Sony hope for the PlayStation Network or its related services to be at least partially online within a week. For more information and the full article, you can view it here.

The second article is that today EA have confirmed to IGN that they will be releasing a new entry for Need for Speed series later this year. Need for Speed: The Run is expected to be released on 18th November, following on from the last entry in the series earlier this month in the form of Shift 2 Unleashed: Need for Speed. Although, The Run is set to not follow the Shift section of the series and is likely to follow on from Undercover as this latest title will be developed by EA Blackbox. You can view the article on he IGN website via this link.

Another item making the news today is that Valve's vice precident for marketing, Doug Lombardi has been noted to have said that the developer is set to give details on the first DLC for Portal 2 in a week. Even greater is that the downloadable content should be available this summer. You read about this in more detail in the IGN article here.

So, that is the biggest headlines for today.I appologise for the this post being short as well as there being no post on Monday or Tuesday. I would also like to say that there will obviously be no Home Weekly post this week, but I hope to instead upload something else. I have indeed been randomthings, you've been reading this and until next time, have fun.

Gaming News Special - PSN Outage Day Three - 23/4/11

Hello again everybody and unforunatly welcome to the third day of the PSN Outage. Checking my Twitter feed this morning, it appears that Sony have given confirmation that the PSN outage was indeed caused by a external issue. Posting on the US and EU PlayStation Blogs, Patrick Seybold and James Gallagher respectively have given word that "an external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services." They further go on to say that as a result of this Sony themselves turned off the server late on Wednesday evening, April 20th. The James Gallagher post can be found here.

I personally at this point have nothing against Sony for the decisions they have made and switching the service offline appears to be the best option. The only thing I do find questionable is that it has taken them three days to confirm that they themselves turned the servers off. If it was indeed them, why did Seybold and Gallagher state this in their first posts. Surely this would increase everybody's trust in Sony if it was common knowledge that they took the servers offline rather than the external intrusion.

Apart from that I am sorry to say that I have no other new information regarding this situation. I would recommend that if you have Facebook or Twitter that you regularly check the PlayStation feeds for updates. Apart from that I will be posting a round-up of the latest news here as always. So, until the next post, I've been randomthings and thank you for watching.

Gaming News Special - PSN Outage: Day Two - 22/4/11

As I reported Yesterday, the online service PlayStation Network, which is available on Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles is currently down. Anybody who does try to sign in will be instead of being signed in, will be faced by error code 80710A06, which is a code regarding the servers being offline for maintenance.

The problem is that Sony have confirmed that the PSN service is not offline for maintenance. Here is the link to the US PlayStation blog, in which Patrick Seybold posted a statement which is the exact same as James Gallagher's post on the EU blog, of which I commented on yesterday. And here again is the link to that post on the EU blog.On the PlayStation EU Twitter feed they have not tweeted for what is now twenty hours, with the last tweet simply being a link to the EU blog post.

Apart from those minimal statements, Sony has given no word regarding this issue, which is known to have been ongoing since at least 7am yesterday morning. In response to this many gamers have been uploading videos of their failed log in attempts to Youtube, with many more commenting and expressing their anger over the situation.

As I posted yesterday, it is still thought that the hacking group Anonymous is responsible for the service outage. It is thought that the group have caused the outage by the means of a distributed denial of service attack, or DDos for short.

A DDos attack can be carried out in a number of ways, these include the group possibly consuming the bandwidth for the network by modding their system to automatically sign in and out of PSN repetitively, this being done many times constantly by many users could cause the service to overload and effectively lock itself down, although this seems highly unlikely given the size of PSN. Another way could be for them to have actually hacked the servers used for PSN and for them to either shut them down or have changed them to not allow any users to log in. A third way could be for the group to have simply blocked the communications that come to the servers, so that no information transactions can take place, hence allowing no one to log in.
This may all indeed seem very complex, but this is just a few of the methods that Anonymous may have used, if it is indeed them.

The group are the ones most likely to be suspected following the information I also posted yesterday, as they disagree with Sony's lawsuit against GeoHot, the modder who initially cracked the PS3's coding, allowing for pirated software to be run on the system.

Since yesterday I have also been looking in detail into the philosophy of Anonymous and the ways in which the group operate. The most important thing I came across is the fact that they operate as a hive-mind, with no one person in charge or more superior than another. Because of this it means that when a 'member' speaks publicly or addresses anyone from outside the group they must speak in terms of the whole of Anonymous and not single them self out, as doing so break their anonymity and defines them as a single member. The group operates so that the 'members' cannot refer to them self as a member, also meaning that overall Anonymous is not technically a group, but really many people using the same name, Anonymous. This probably does seem like a rather difficult thing to understand. This link is to one of Anonymous' videos posted on Youtube. This may help to explain this concept. Also, an Anonymous is many individuals, this could possibly mean that only a handful, or even one Anonymous person is carrying out these attacks.

So, for now that is another update regarding the outage situation. I will post any more news as the events develop, but it appears that who has caused this problem is not willing to stop until they have reached their goal.

Before I go, I would just like to sign off as always, saying is randomthings and thank you for reading.

Gaming News - 21/4/11

Hello to everybody and welcome to the first Gaming post, which is for today, Thursday 21st April 2011. As I posted the other day, my post for Thursday isn't a set item as it were, although I will be doing just general gaming news posts every Friday, as well as the occasional Thursday and maybe Saturday.

So, the first 'headline' today is the release of Operation Flashpoint: Red River, which is the third title in the Operation Flashpoint series, although it could be regarded as the second as Codemasters appear to have taken over the development of the series following the company's fall out with original developer Bohemia Interactive.

Red River follows the story of a group of US Marine Corps as they move in to help settle a civil war in Tajikistan in the year 2013. After the People's Liberation Army of China become aware of the Marines in their neigbouring country they ask them to leave and once the Marine's refuse a far greater conflict erupts.

Red River follows the game gameplay style as it predecessor, heavily using tactical gameplay to try and overcome enemies in a realistic manner, with the developers saying that the play can indeed be killed with a single shot providing the shot is in a fatal area, providing a much more realistic experience in comparison to similar FPS titles. The game also boasts a campaign that can be played co-operatively with up to four players with a deep, narrative storyline to compliment it.

Moving on now and the second piece of news is that Sony have given official word concerning the Playstation Network outages that have occurred throughout today. It appears that many PSN users have had problems when trying to sign into the service. These problems have spark concerns that the hacking group Anonymous have in fact caused the issues by the means of a DDoS attack. The group announced a campaign against Sony earlier this month. The operation, dubbed OpSony began as a result of their disapproval of Sony's lawsuit against the hackers who originally cracked the PS3's code, enabling modders to run pirated software, amongst other things.

In one of the statement given by Sony, European blog manager James Gallagher posts that "while we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we're able to get the service completely back up and running."
You can view the post on the blog by visiting this link.

So, that's the top news for day. Thank you again for reading, I'm randomthings and until next time, goodbye.

Home Weekly - Playstation Home 1.50 is now live - Although unfortunately S2 is nowhere to be seen

Hello to all and welcome once again. Now, you may remember a while back that I posted about Sodium 2: Project Velocity, which is the follow up to Lockwood's ever popular Playstation Home game, Sodium One and it's related game, Salt Shooter. As I also previously posted I have been incredibly impressed with S2 and was eagerly awaiting its full release along with home client V1.5. Today client V1.5 was launched, although unfortunately S2 is nowhere to be seen.

Posting earlier today on the European Playstation Blog, SCEE blog manager James Gallagher announced the 1.5 client now being online and listed the new features available to players. The first one listed and by far the biggest is real-time multiplayer, meaning that the networking has been greatly improved which should allow for faster games to be created, including FPS.

The second thing to be listed is the improved physics. Here Gallagher cites that developers now have "improved access to the core elements of the Havok physics engine". I personally never knew that Home runs of the Havok engine, so that to me is an interesting fact. He then follows on to note the overall improved graphics animation and graphics.

As for the additional content Audi have released a new game in the form of Audi Sled, a manic downhill sled race for up to six players.

Home Threads has also received a bulk of new content in the form of clothing for SOCOM: Special Forces, some of which is free, as well as SOCOM furniture being available from Furniture and Alter Ego.

The next announcement is that nDreams have begun a two week event dubbed Aurora War. The event actually began on the 17th, but will still run until May 1st. In the event North America will be compared to Europe, as the top fifty percent of all Orb Runner and Aurora Defence scores from both terrioties will constantly be recorded and shown to everyone via AuroraWar.com.

The final new content, does in fact come from Lockwood. The first is numerous new furniture for the Cucumber collection of items.

The second is a new game... TankTop. This new game is only a demo version though and can be played in Home Square. It is similar to Salt Shooter, but is instead shown from a top-down perspective and is small, appearing to be played on a large table. Anyone who is familiar with Salt Shooter will most likely understand the game and it's gameplay style. Even if you are not familiar to it, as I said the demo is available in the Square. To unlock the full version of TankTop, the player must purchase Blaster's Paradise, the new Personal Space from Lockwood.

Blaster's Paradise is the dream Personal Space for any fans of Sodium. The space stays true to the themes and designs in Sodium and is set around a beach location, offering sandy areas, a waterfall and of course, the full version of TankTop, along with a highscore board. Overall I personally feel that Blaster's Paradise has already made good use of 1.50's improved graphics.

So, that is all of client 1.50's new offerings and I feel that they are a fair jump from 1.40 and can indeed see the potential of the client's new power if used by the right developers in the right way. It is a shame that S2 hasn't been released on the originally hoped for release date, but this may mean that Lockwood wish to further develop the game and improve it more.

If you wish to read the full and original details regarding 1.50, James Gallagher's post can be viewed here from his post feed. At the moment it is currently the top post on the feed, but being the blog manager and always posting more, it will begin to move down the list and may later require some hunting to find the post.

And to add onto everything I have said, if you do own a PS3 and currently have not tried Home, why not give it a go? It's a feature that many PSN users overlook and never do try. Some people do like it, whilst others don't, it's simply a difference of opinion, but it is PSN's largest social feature and one that has been carefully thought out.

And finally I would like to mention that this series of posts, ''Home Weekly'' will be joining the post schedule I posted earlier today, with Home Weekly being posted on Saturday's, but I felt it was more relevant posting this today.

So this is randomthings and until next time, thank you for reading.

Even more annoucements

Hello again everyone. Today I would also like to announce that I have now also come up with a schedule for all of the content I produce. Hopefully this should give me an idea of what to do as well as showing you all what I am going to do.

The following order will be the weekly order for blog posts:
Monday - Game review
Tuesday - "LBP2 Level Review"
Wednesday - No Content - I am normally busy on Wednesdays. Although I may possibly post.
Thursday - "Why I Get Annoyed By" or a gamer review or other news
Friday - General gaming news
Saturday - Anything

I aim to also create one Youtube video a week, although I am unsure when I will begin uploading them. That will most probably be uploaded on Saturdays, although not for a few weeks, at least.
This will be the rough schedule I will try and stick to, although this will possibly change is there is any big news or I cannot do that day's post for some reason.

So, thank you again for reading. I am still randomthings and until next-time, goodbye.

The top 10 games I'm looking forward to this year

Hello again to everybody. Now, I probably should have done this soon and more towards the beginning of the year, but I guess I could still post this now. As with everybody, there's a number of games that I am eagerly awaiting to come out later in the year, I thought I would post a list my top 10.

10 - Duke Nukem Forever (PS3, 360 and PC)
This is a title that has become something of a legend, having one of the longest development cycles for a video game, having been in development in one form or another since 1997. I was shocked to have seen a few months ago that the game has now been given a set release date and that there is finally a trailer available that roughly reflects the finished product.

I will be incredibly interested to see what Gearbox Software have created, given the parts of the game already developed by 3D Realms. Duke Nukem Forever will (hopefully) be released on the 10th of June worldwide, except for North America, which can expect the Duke to be reaching them four days later.

9 - Battlefield 3 (PS3, 360 and PC)
Until the beginning of the year I wouldn't have even considered placing Battlefield 3 on this list as I did cast something on a blind eye over Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and I don't think I ever gave it as much attention as it deserves. Once I had played through the campaign, which was rather slowly in my case, I then barely touched upon its multiplayer.

Having said that though, I have had endless fun playing Medal of Honor multiplayer, so that allowed to see the Frostbite engine running multiplayer. Those points along with the fact that Battlefield 3's trailers show groundbreaking graphics and fact that it took one member of the DICE team a whole week to set up Frostbite 1.5 outside of the company office. To me this shows that Battlefield 3 should be a seriously powerful game when it comes out on the 2nd of November.

8 - DiRT 3 (PS3, 360 and PC)
When I got hold of a copy of Colin McRae: DiRT 2, put simply, I was blown away by it. With the exception of Burnout Paradise I personally haven't ever had as much fun playing a diving game. Despite moving away from the style of the original game, DiRT 2 still has a great rally-style feel to it and respectfully pays tribute to the late Colin McRae himself.

Like Burnout Paradise I loved the fact that the game still had a lot of playability even long after the main aspect of the game was complete. In DiRT 2 I felt compelled to try and reach the highest XP level, which I assume is 100, even though I had completed the game's singlepayer section at level 85. That said I still have never hit the level cap. In DiRT 3, as far as I am aware, Codemasters are going to in some respects move the series into a game more similar to that of DiRT 2, while also expanding upon the rally elements, which as new snow terrain stages.

I for one, do hope that the game does become something different as I feel that Codematers can now begin to slowly drift away from the games being a part of the Colin McRae series, leaving what they already have as a great tribute to one of the world's greatest rally drivers. DiRT is expect to be available for sale on May 24th.

7 - Alice: Madness Returns (PS3, 360 and PC)
Until quite recently I hadn't even heard of American McGee's Alice, the first entry in the Alice series. Once I had I was hooked on the concept, having also loved least year's Alice in Wonderland film. I love the Gothic themes portrayed with in film and feel that American McGee's Alice also put across a strong Gothic element. I haven't actually played the first game, so really have nothing to go by except for instinct and a simple desire to want to play the new title.

With the two games they explore Alice life after the events of both Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, with Alice's house having burnt down her house and killed her family, all except her. As a result Alice is in a fragile state of mind and is sent to the Rutledge Asylum. While there she eventually find herself re-entering Wonderland, which has become twisted as a result of her unstable mental health.

Madness Returns is set long after the first game, after Alice has since been released from the asylum, although once again she finds herself within a warped and dark Wonderland. While there she also seeks the answers she has asked herself concerning her parents deaths.
Apart from that I don't think I have much else to say, just that I hope to see good things from this title upon it's launch on June 14th.

6 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3, 360 and PC)
Despite the many things I have said about the Call of Duty series I am curious as to how well Activison will be able to create Modern Warfare 3 with Infinity Ward now supposedly defunct. I would like to to into detail about Modern Warfare 3, but I am instead going to being doing a two part series of posts about this over the next few days.

5 - Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception (PS3)
When Drakes Fortune, the first in the Uncharted series was released I payed no attention to it, even though I have been a long time fan of Naught Dog's Jak and Daxter series, I didn't have any faith in Uncharted. It wasn't until a year later that I downloaded the demo out of sheer boredom, with nothing else to do to occupy my time. Once I did play it I was blown away by what I had come across and found myself buying the game the very next day.

I am amazed to see what Naughty Dog have created, in part due to the film-like experience, with a powerful story and well created characters and also due the game's mind-blowing graphic. To me it always seems that Naughty Dog is one of the few developers that seemed to be able to push the Playstation 3 to near it's limits.

In Uncharted 3, players should be able see how Naughty Dog have furthered their graphical output with the game containing lush desert environments and a particular focus on water and fire physics.

Uncharted 3 can be expected to be out on November 1st and 4th in the North American and UK regions respectively, as well as a post from me about it.

4 - inFAMOUS 2 (PS3)
As with Uncharted, inFAMOUS was another game that I was skeptical when it was first released, but later became interested after playing the demo. The world of inFAMOUS features Cole McGrath, who finds himself in the epicenter of a government conspiracy and a whole load of super powers after a package he was expected to deliver blows up.

This may at first sound like a slight twist on classic superhero stories, which inFAMOUS is loosely based upon, with a similar comic book style, except inFAMOUS' main focus is that the player can actively chose if they become a hero or infamous by making many different moral decisions throughout the game. As well as all of that, the game is set in a open world, which is spit between different islands, in a similar manner to Grand Theft Auto.

inFAMOUS 2 sets to expand upon the experience provided by the first game in the series, with Sucker Punch hoping to expand the karma system in place in the first game, meaning players will have a greater rein over how they develop throughout the game and having more choices as whether to evil. when it reaches the shops on June 7th.

3 - Ratchet and Clank: One 4 All (PS3)
Moving swiftly, onwards and here is number three on my list. Having been a fan of Ratchet and Clank since the release of the original game on the Playstation 2. I can see great things coming from this game, with Insomniac Games focusing this title of co-operative gameplay, a feature which has not been seen in the series since Ratchet: Gladiator. The co-op is set to be designed for up to four players, both on and offline.

As a result of the online and offline co-op gameplay Insomniac have opted to display the game with a fixed camera angle that will show all of the players at once, in comparison to split-screen. This means they had to redesign the characters to be in proportion to each other, giving the characters a look that is unique and quite different to how they have been shown in previous titles.

Beyond that Insomniac have been rather quiet about revealing the game's plot, only really explaining that Doctor Nefarious' plan of destroying Ratchet, Clank and Qwark once and for all ends in disaster, leaving him and his three archenemies fighting for survival from a mysterious unknown enemy.

Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One is due to be on the horizon around autumn, so keep your eyes peeled for this title.

2 - Resistance 3 (PS3)
Down to number two on the list now and this is Resistance 3, another title out later this year from Insomniac Games. Following on from their blockbuster release, Resistance 2, the third entry into the series main story, the game is this time focused on survivor Joseph Capelli, once a soldier alongside Nathan Hale, the protagonist of the first two Resistance games. Hale is now not included in the series following the shocking cliffhanger at the end of R2. At this point I would like to say, if you haven't already played Resistance or Resistance 2, then why the hell not? There are two games most definitely worth getting hold of and both also now fairly cheap.

Fans of the series, as well as newcomers should find this latest installment to be an interesting new chapter. Since the events in R2, humanity is down to it's last survivors, with them being forced to hide from the Chimeran forces that now control the planet. The few now that still fight back now have to with any scraps they can find, including grenades that are made of nails being attached to bean tins.

The critically accliamed online has also been changed, with the action being toned down from a maximum of 60 player matches to a maximum of 32, with Insomniac Games hoping this will create a tighter, meaner, faster and more exciting experience in comparison to Resistance 2's large maps, which could result in players often spending their time simply finding enemies or moving into the current area of action.

The online co-op elements has also been dropped, but a co-op version of the single player campaign will again be available.

Resistance 3 has been dated for a release on September 6th, in North America, with other regions expected to have the game shortly after.

1 - The Last Guardian (PS3)
Finally, number one on my list and I would like to speak about The Last Guardian. The Last Guardian is currently in development by a incredibly small Japanese team called Team ICO, named so after their first title for the Playstation 2. ICO was a game that was very individual at the time, combining puzzle, beautiful graphics and an emotionally gripping story.

Their second title, The Shadow of the Colossus is considered to be a spiritual prequel to ICO as well as a sequel, combining story elements from the previous games and also adding new facts to the story. The Last Guardian is set to combine gameplay elements from both other games, with ICO's puzzle aspects and the fighting style from The Shadow of the Colossus.

Apart from that I honestly know very little else about the game, apart from the rough outline of the game's story, which revolves around the friendship between a young boy and a griffin-like creature.

So, that is my top ten games that are yet to come out later this year. I would like to point out that I did consider adding Portal 2 to this list, but being less that two weeks away from release I wanted to instead mention games which are further off.

So, after this somewhat length post, I have indeed been randomthings and I would like to thank you very much for reading this and I'll of course be posting again soon.
